With anonymous faces

you watch over my cradle,

your voice as soft as the aurora,

hair the color of a Ditch Lily

brushes against my cheek

and when I look up

my own face echoes back

at me.

My first rainbows are soaked

in your tears,

I am busy with life Mother,

its been so many years.

I am  filled with light,

is that so wrong?

  1. Holly.
At times, words are evasive little devils, and I’m not very good with them, as you might have noticed. Not only am I eternally appreciative of your support, I’m also very much enchanted by your poetry. Vastly different from mine, as it should be, it has something that my verses incessantly lack, it has soul, it has vulnerability.
Very rarely have I written a vulnerable poem, but you seem to nail it every time, and I’m sorry I don’t visit more often. As a poet I love would say, “I’m busy with life Mother”.

  2. Evocative … images of my mother looking down at me, as I lay in the crib, crying. It’s my very first memory. I was 1 year or a bit less. As an adult, I asked my mother about this. Although she was shocked that I had this memory, she told me that I had some kind of fever, that only happened at night. She would come and watch me in the crib, but there was nothing she could do. It lasted several months, which is why I think there is such a deep imprint.
A truly beautiful poem Holly! When she was at the end of her life, I looked upon her. There was nothing I could do. Is that so wrong?
    Powerful words.

    1. Such a poignant memory Resa. It’s amazing how some things are so strong we can remember them at a very young age. We feel guilt that we can do nothing to stop the process when we are not at all in control of life and death. Thank you lovely.

      1. Although guilt is a concept, even a feeling that we have learned, it weighs more than lead. Thank you, too, lovely!
(Have you written any of your mom memories out for posterity?)

    Bisous Bernard
