In the hushed silence between waves
sighs fill the night as stars come alive
and the breeze is a soft poem.
Nude in the moon light but for drifting
shadows the swirl in your glass keeps
perfect time with far off thunder.
I need to look away from your gun powder eyes
that lethal shot
before the fluttering of a thousand butterflies
betray me.
I breathe in the circlets of your cigarette and
the honey sweet scent of willing hostages.
As fragile as fireflies we escape to the madness of
our minds where all we have to do is live.

  10. I don’t think Lord Byron or William Blake could make romantic poetry like this. Perhaps John Keats could have had he lived. No, it takes that heart you possess, Rene, to turn words into magic sighs on the beach in Jamaica that has attended to countless loves since the world first set anchor offshore.

      1. I thank you as well Rene. Yesterday was the best day I’ve had in several years on the trail. I was actually able to run part of the way. I clocked 11 miles up in the mountains and was feeling awesome and then came home and read your poem. Negril just finished the day on a beautiful note.

          1. Yes, exactly. I find this odd fall has still gifted us with perfect days and a late cascade of color. I’m happy to report all the flora and fauna I observed were healthy and happy as was I. That beach scene tho, what an exquisite way for me to finish my day. ❤️

          3. Woo hooo! Long hike, ocean dip, and next day spa time. I think I could develop an addiction to that. I finally gave in to therapeutic massage and then had to ask myself why I hadn’t made it part of my wellness program all along. It’s never to late to start 😊.

          5. Definitely! I’m finding mainstream medicine is embracing proven alternative treatments here in ole Alabama, which I’m all for because it has definitely worked for me. I’m also learning essential oil therapy. My goal is to become a dark Gothic steampunk vampire alchemist. 🧛🏻‍♂️🦇⚗️

          7. If you aren’t sensitive to scents, you might like essential oils. I have made soap, first aid antiseptic, muscle soreness, and bug repellent for my outdoor adventures with all natural ingredients. I can do a lot more but those were my priorities. They work great. No harsh chemicals and no bad smells. Of course, it’s possible I don’t smell exactly normal to the wildlife but I’ve noticed the deer, squirrels, and chipmonks don’t seem to mind the moving spice garden in their neighborhood. 😆

          9. I think as long as the bears are grinning, I’m good. 🐻😎🐿. Get your friend to make something for you in a carrier oil to try. They make very small, 2 ml, drip, or roller ball applicators you can use to see if you like it. The carrier oil thins out the scent considerably and slows evaporation so you get the benefits without a strong scent. My therapist uses it for deep tissue massage and that hard plastic roller so popular with physical therapists. That roller is such exquisite pain. Too bad de Sade didn’t have plastic roller tubes in his day. He might have taken a totally different direction with his fascination with pain. The ladies don’t mind it at all, but us boys scream like fingers stuck in a car door. 🙀

          11. Waaa haa haaa! Next time you strain your back or leg muscles get it rolled out. You’ll never go back to Motrin and all those smelly rubs. When your therapist says, “I’ll get those glutes for you,” you can smile and tell the ole Marquis he was born too soon. 🏏🧛‍♀️
